Derby Shoes
As sturdy and established as the name sounds, the Derby is an essential in any man’s wardrobe, and can undoubtedly be suited for any event- formal, casual or semi-casual. An evolution to the Oxford (as some suggest), a great pair of Derby shoes has more space in its instep with its adjustable lacing. Some theories hypothesise that Edward Smith Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, invented the famous cut. Edward, a man of good proportions, required more space and more robust boots to wear. In accordance with the situation at hand, his shoemaker founded the open-laced low-cut boots that were easier and more comfortable on Edward’s feet, compared to the closed-laced boots.
It is a meticulous task to decipher which shoe came first – Oxford or Derby – since the mention of Derby is dated around the same time Oxford made its appearance. Nevertheless, Derby shoes are incredibly versatile and are less rigid. Essentially seen in the black undertones, the shoe now can be found in various colours, and has been modernised to include the coming-of-age man and his needs.
