Oxford Shoes
The Balmoral, named after the Balmoral Castle, is a timeless English shoe that first originated in Scotland. Gaining popularity two centuries after its origination, the beautiful fabrication of the design gained massive popularity in the late 1800s. The famous English preparatory schools had embraced the shoe’s seamless design and sleek silhouette, and hence, was later called “Oxford.”
But before the classic lace-up Oxford shoes, the more common footwear amongst the English men was the high-top footgear that needed to be buttoned up. However, Oxford shoes, with their bow-tie laces, were perceived to be feminine by the masses.
Nonetheless, there was no denying that, with the laces, the design was more convenient, classy and comfortable to wear- one of the prominent characteristics which played a pivotal role to Oxford’s popularity.
Oxford shoes soon became a household name amongst the businessmen and entrepreneurs, as the new cosmopolitan hit. The signature design of the shoe was a noteworthy event in the professional market, and a delightful example of a rich heritage. With the jazz age in the early 20th century came the flapper culture, adding an element of flair with two-toned leather, contrasting to make a chic design.
